Seeking Justice_edited.jpg

Seeking Justice
20" x 20" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

In times of uncertainty, we look for truth and understanding. The search for justice can seem to be behind vaulted doors.
Where is "...with liberty and justice for all"?

Seeking Justice II.jpg

Seeking Justice II
20" x 20" Oil, Collage & Cold Wax on Canvas

Amidst confusion and in a chaotic, rapidly changing world, we search for truth, fairness, and meaning. Sometimes my subconscious takes over on the canvas and elucidates the message that my conscious mind might overlook.

Spring Training
36" x 36"  Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

I'm motivated by growth, both in myself and in the outside world. This painting began as a skyscape with only a blue sky and two roughed-in cherry branches. It didn't work as I had visualized, so  I turned it to the wall for two years.
When I looked at it again, I saw all that it could be and with botanic life emulating human life as we search for the best in ourselves.

Reflections 101_ The Art of Self-Discovery

Reflections 101
24" x 48" Oil, Cold Wax  & Collage on Canvas

Finalist, Bold Abstracts Exhibition, Camelback Gallery

As a medium to mix with paint, cold wax gives depth and texture that is difficult to achieve any other way. This painting gives rise to texture, movement, and a range of grays, both warm and cool. I find authority in this strong work.

Mysteries Unsolved
30" x 30" Oil & Oil Sticks on Canvas

I found a vortex in this painting that is both strong and warm. The rich browns take me down to the yellow and burnt orange.  The horizontal lines connect the two cliff-like structures while the angular lines take me up to the blues. This is one of those paintings that mysteriously expressed its own voice.

Marion Kahn Rhapsody in Blue oil on canvas 36 x 36.jpg

Rhapsody in Blue
36" x 36" Oil on Canvas

Painted from George Gershwin's music

When I listen to the familiar opening of Rhapsody in Blue, the clarinet glissando moves me up, as does the low angular line moving from the bottom left up. All the city sounds, clacking of high heels, walking up and down stairs, large flowing expressions and piano keys are reflected here. At the end I added 3 gold lines to suggest that the angular line is a piano lid and the 3 gold lines are piano strings....

Emily Mason, wife of Wolf Kahn (both now deceased), created marvelous paintings by mixing irresistible paint colors, which she would thin and pour from little cat food tins. Her results are mesmerizing. In her honor, I used her technique to create this painting. I really like this painting, but I like her paintings even more. Now you understand the title--I'm thinking about Emily and playing with her technique.

Floating.jpg

Floating
24" x 48" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

This painting started as a horizontal cityscape. But cold wax is not a good medium for detail. Instead of calling it quits, I rotated the canvas 90 degrees, removed recognizable images, and created these lotus-like floaters. The orange on the left grounds me while the floating fantasies carry me up.

These colors remind me of my marvelous, 100-year-old aunt, Jane.

Jane knows how to put together marvelous color combinations and did so long before turquoise and tangerine were more commonly accepted. Jane is still beautiful and bold.

Nightwatch Over the Village
48" x 48" Oil on Canvas

Even in darkness, there is warmth and motion. Do you see a hillside or neighborhoods  or movement?  I do. This mix of deeper hues suggests the mystery I find in evenings.

The Space in Between. III: Music
36" x 36". Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas
Magazine Cover for Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide

If you've ever lost someone out of season, you, too, will relate to the desire to connect with them. But how can we get from this realm to that one? The desire to reach a loved one who had passed motivated this painting. Of course, that's not possible. There is something between here and there. It divides us, that space in between. But that space is alive and permeable. The pink collage bird was only an undefined shape until I pulled the right edge. Then, the shape became a bird. Some philosophies believe that birds have the mystical ability to move between realms. Now I see birds in most of my paintings, but I have never painted a bird.

The Space in Between. II: Forest
20" x 60". Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting is the second in my Space in Between series. It investigates the same mysterious craving to reach from this world to the next one. The space in between seems permeable, but if it is, it's very difficult to pass through it.
